This event is the first in a series of activities that the Montreal Climate Coalition intends to carry out in this municipal election year and to kick off its second decade: café-rencontres, webinars on topics of interest, work sessions to prepare for city council sessions or debates, exchange tables, with a view to a metropolitan vision and more.

Against a backdrop of political turbulence, here’s an opportunity to ask our elected representatives and all players in society to renew their commitment to supporting citizen climate action.

After two years of anniversary events in virtual mode, the Coalition is looking forward to seeing you in person to share the state of play and promising actions around the theme “Going Carbon Neutral by 2042, 20 years to act”. Indeed, global warming is intensifying and there is little time left to act. The latest IPCC report is unequivocal: the current status quo will lead to disastrous consequences, unless concrete and decisive climate action is taken now.

Over the past 20 years, actions in the Montreal community have attempted to change the trend. While recognizing the successes, current efforts are insufficient to reverse the trend. What can be done to intensify action in the face of the climate emergency? How can we convince elected officials to go further and undertake the required changes? How can we engage all the actors in the necessary transition, including elected officials, public servants, leaders of various organizations, workers and all citizens? These are some of the topics that will be addressed during our 7th anniversary through conferences, an intergenerational roundtable, sharing and workshops dealing with your projects and action strategies to engage the Montreal community on the path of a real ecological transition towards carbon neutrality. Different themes will be addressed: citizen mobilization, development of public policies in favor of the climate, building political and democratic consensus, support for project leaders and social action catalyst for action!

There is a vast pool of talent and energy in our neighbourhoods, businesses and schools that regularly demonstrates its support for a rapid transition to carbon neutrality. Without the participation of these same people in the design and implementation of a credible plan, we risk losing the momentum that was so present before the pandemic.

What is each party proposing to facilitate the participation of the hundreds of thousands of people who marched for the climate? Come hear representatives from Ensemble Montréal, Mouvement Montréal and Projet Montréal debate the best strategies for harnessing popular energy to help the city make a green shift that is fair, equitable and inclusive.
The debate will also cover each party’s position on the implementation of recommendations stemming from the public consultation on the reduction of Montreal’s dependence on fossil fuels. Following the consultation, the #MTL400 Declaration was drafted by the Montreal Climate Coalition to accelerate adoption of the consultation’s most promising climate governance solutions. It now counts some 160 organizational signatories, in addition to prominent scientists and researchers.

A few stats to get you warmed up for the debate: 

• Montreal’s GHG reduction target: 55% below 1990 levels by 2030 (source)
• Annual greenhouse gas reduction between 1990 and 2017: ± 1% (source)
• Annual reduction needed to reach our target (2018-2030): ± 2% ((55% – 29%) / 13 years)

We must therefore double the pace of reductions in a context where much of the low-hanging fruit has already been picked. Moreover, we cannot count on coincidences such as the closure of the Shell refinery in 2010, which on its own represents 20% of the emissions reduced since 1990.

The delay in producing a GHG inventory (and the delay in assessing the effectiveness of our actions):

• Saint-Laurent: 1 year (source)

• Paris: 1.5 years (source)
• Outremont: 1.5 years (source)
• Toronto: 2 years (source)
• Montréal: 3 years (source)

It is important to note that the 55% target does not take into account emissions from our consumption of goods produced outside of Montreal, nor from air travel, making the hole we need to stop digging ourselves into even deeper. Furthermore, the 2050 carbon neutrality target is far from considered equitable for a city like Montreal, as we are a relatively wealthy city from a global perspective. (source)

Emission reduction now aims, through the Climate COOK application, to enable hundreds of thousands of people to improve the climate impact of their food.

Climate COOK aims to help people transition to a low-carbon diet. See a presentation of the application.

Also, we are currently raising funds through community bonds ($30,000 @ $500/bond).
Our goal is to use this money as leverage to raise additional funds to finance the development of our application. For more information on our bonds, see our prospectus.

Community Bonds allow individuals to invest (via a loan) in a non-profit organization with the expectation of getting their money back at the end of the term (as with any start-up, there are no guarantees and the investment is highly risky). Please note that the bonds are open for purchase until April 29, 2021.

We aim to meet the challenges of waste diversion in Montreal to reach its net zero target by 2030

The program was inspired by the city’s massive undertaking to go zero waste by 2030 and aimes to incorporate strategies that along with the UN SDGs.The program aims to meet the city’s net zero target by 2030. Starting last year WeDIP has already engaged with 12 government departments, 10 organizations, and 10 volunteers/student interns. We need help from the city and other sponsors attempting to identify key challenges, gap assessment and international best practices to design an implementation framework.
